LOGENHAUS

The “Johannisloge” has a reference to John the Baptist. The name “Zum Märkischen Hammer” is derived from the hammer mills that used to operate in our area. There is documentary evidence that eight Lüdenscheid citizens were members of the Iserlohn Masonic Lodge as early as 1797. On May 6, 1888, the Lüdenscheid Lodge was founded by 19 members of other lodges. The Lüdenscheid lodge “Zum Märkischen Hammer” was founded during the reign of the 99-day emperor and Freemason Friedrich III under his protectorate. After the outbreak of the First World War, parts of the lodge building were made available as a reserve hospital in 1914. In 1934/35, all lodges were closed under National Socialism and their assets expropriated without compensation. The Lüdenscheid lodge was converted into a dairy. In the post-war period, the 32 members of the lodge who had survived the Second World War had to meet outside the lodge. In 1953, the building was returned to the lodge by court order.
