MOURNING HEAT (열곡(熱哭))
Performance

Mourning Heat (열곡(熱哭)) is a performative installation exploring loss and transition through heat. At its core, a “mourning device” generates thermoacoustic sound as heat expands and moves air within ceramic tubes held by performers. Each performer finds their own mourning sound, which builds into a collective resonance, amplified by rising heat. This sound, evoking farewell rituals, symbolizes releasing the departed into the sky. In a time where mourning is often condensed, Mourning Heat offers an extended space for grief, transcending language through sound, heat, and resonance.

BON KIM

Bon Kim is an artist based in South Korea and Germany whose work explores the boundaries between the living and non-living through performative installations and new media. Her practice integrates thermal phenomena, sculpture, performance, and the body.

INTERVIEW

In her interview, the artist explains how her work ‘Mourning Heat’ is connected to LICHTROUTEN and how it explores grief through the medium of luminous heat. The installation utilises heat as a physical and emotional element to enable resonance and collective experience. The exhibition is given special significance by its location: the ‘Freimaurer’ building, which is otherwise not open to the public. Through her work, Kim transcends both physical and emotional boundaries by bringing grief to life as a universal experience in a new context.
