New building for the Lüdenscheid City Music School
The new building for the music school has been built on the corner of Hochstrasse and Staberger Strasse. The existing premises in the “Alte Post” on Altenaer Strasse no longer met current requirements. As part of an architectural competition with subsequent negotiation procedure, the design by the WW+ architectural firm from Trier won one of the two first places. The Lüdenscheid City Council decided to carry out the project based on the ideas of this firm and commissioned WW+ to plan the design.
The design approved by the council was the basis for the city’s application for funding as part of the “Mensch Altstadt!” project. 80 percent of the costs were borne by the federal and state governments. Funding from the Arnsberg district government was included. Regular music school operations have been running since the opening on August 27, 2022.

The new building of the music school forms a new starting point and anchor point in the existing urban structure. The varied topography of the terrain with the staggered heights and the distinctive chestnut tree characterize the location. A vertical slatted structure as a facade envelops the entire volume. The slanting of the slats on different levels creates a special swing in the facade surface. Like a dynamic, acoustic wave, the band runs around the shell structure and connects all four sides of the facade and is reminiscent of curved musical notes. The facade design symbolizes the structure of a piece of music through a steady beat that is enlivened and moved by a lively melody. With the entrance, the path inside runs around the atrium courtyard along the room brackets, rejoins the outside facade towards the street and allows a view of the surroundings.
