Interesting facts about the Sternplatz

From the Straßenstern to Sternplatz Lüdenscheid

Initially, Kölner Straße, Knapperstraße, Wilhelmstraße and Altenaer Straße form a street star.

The intersection is increasingly regulated as the volume of motor vehicle traffic increases, and over time the flow of traffic is controlled with zebra crossings, traffic lights and a roundabout.

Haus Hulda from 1881/82 is the oldest building in this area and a fragment of the original buildings on the street star.

In 1971, construction of the town hall tunnel begins, and when it is completed in 1975, traffic is moved from the street intersection to underground, and Sternplatz is born. Since 1973, the pedestrian zone has been located here, which follows the former street courses in a star shape from Sternplatz.

The Neumann fountain has defined the center of the square since 1977. Kurt Toni Neumann created a water basin with a diameter of around 7 m made of bronze and copper, with a central fountain and 6 outlets from the central attachment. Events from the city’s history are shown on the seating area.

In 1981, the sculptures Uncle Willi and Felix by Waldemar Wien were placed in front of the Hulda House.

Today’s Sternplatz is not a historical or urban square, but rather reflects the development of the city.
