FACE OF UNIVERSE
Videography
Photographs of wildflowers growing in cities are the source material for this audiovisual composition. Tatsuru Arai shows them as a symbol of the crucial role of CO2-processing organisms in climate change and the global carbon cycle. “Face of the Universe” is a large-format projection that stages the transformation processes of photosynthesis and the interplay of light, water, and plants as a life-giving cycle. High-resolution images provide microscopic insights, and he uses AI-based programs to visualize textures and dynamics of the transformation processes. They show how solar energy creates energy-rich organic substances from low-energy inorganic substances. “Flowers often play a central role in my work. They have a universal language – they symbolize beauty, transience, resilience, and the passage of time. When I create art that incorporates flowers, I consider how their forms and meanings can harmonize with the space while evoking emotions and thoughts,” said the artist.
TATSURU ARAI
From audio to visual compositions: Tatsuru Arai develops correspondences between classical composition techniques and digital technologies. A central component of his work is using artificial intelligence and algorithmic systems, which he uses to generate visual and auditory elements. This approach allows him to visualize complex relationships innovatively and make them audible.
Tatsuru Arai lives in Berlin (de). He studied at the Tokyo Music Academy (BA/Diploma) from 2003 to 2009 and from 2009 to 2013 in Berlin (de) at the Hanns Eisler Music Academy (MA).
