Argentinian-born artist Rafael Soto Acebal is constantly driven by his interest in the interaction between light and its behavior with different materials, mainly in which the phenomenon of polarization is produced. As a multidisciplinary artist who develops objects through various processes, Soto Acebal is guided by his background in architectural studies. The main topic he explores is the dialogue between the urban environment and the future development that humankind must have to keep a balance between nature and technology. This interest led him to a posthuman and futurist conceptualization and production of light-reactive objects.
Get to meet Rafael Soto Acebal´s work through the following questions provided by Young Curator Elías López
// How does working with this polarization phenomenon of light contribute to imagining other potential futures?
Ephemeral limit, which can create as the word polarization or cresr says two distinct poles that is the reality in which we usually live and a new way of seeing things that is the polarized space as an observer the creation of a contemplative space and meditation.
// How do you connect the notions of harmony and balance parasites challenge with the context of energy systems or societal dynamics?
The idea of parasites comes from the hand of interruptions or distortions in a system that can generate new ways of relating or change the dynamics of how we relate giving new results and stimulating creativity.
// How would you describe light as an energy source that influences or transforms the conceptual and physical framework of your artistic practice?
Light as an omnipresent medium in our environment, I consider it as an opportunity for transformation and distortion that can lead us to the creation of new imaginaries. We cannot be in total absence of light or in total darkness. Our reality, whether we like it or not, is always somehow altered , it is not pure as we usually think , so I believe that through observation and enhancement through materiality and systems we can generate elements of perceptual dissociation or altered states of consciousness that lead us to rethink ourselves.
// Why would you think it is important to talk about new energies as resources and as spiritual matter?
I believe that the use of new energies can provide alternative forms of the human being’s relationship with his environment and give rise to a new expansion of consciousness.
