Diafanizado consists in a specific glass casting technique and after processing that let the video projection stay on the glass and for it to be visible from the other side. It consists of 3 glass casted pieces, 3 layers of video that is projected on the glass and three physical focuses for observation. This project is conceptually based on a Japanese proverb which mentions that everyone has three “faces” or “masks”. One that is shown to the world, one that is shown to their closest beings and one that we keep to ourselves.
Diaphonization (or diaphonisation), also known as clearing and staining, is a staining technique used on animal specimens that first renders the body of the animal transparent by bathing it in trypsin, and then stains the bones and cartilage with various dyes, usually alizarin red and alcian blue.
…”There is also a psychological approach that studies behavior and mentions that usually, humans develop different conduct depending on who we are surrounded by. In both ideas, these masks, conduits, faces, or behaviors are led by the environment, not the self. I connect my life process with these concepts to bring up this project where I intend to make those masks transparent to find and show an authentic self, my primary purpose in my spiritual development”…
ELÍAS LÓPEZ
The young Ecuadorian artist based in Bremen explores techniques to connect his personal spiritual and psychological development with his material research within his multidisciplinary practice. Lopez finds glass as a material constantly present in his projects which leads him to experiment with different methodologies of handling it. In the case of “Diafanizado” his exploration raises the Japanese proverb that considers the possibility that each person has different masks, each mask depending on the environment in which one surrounds itself. This conceptual as well as material exploration carries a subtext as an individual reflection opening the possibility of interpetacion through a generative video projection made possible by the glass treatment technique developed by the artist.
