ABOVE THE LAW

In 2022, in the midst of Brazil’s rigid anti-drug legislation, the ‘Above the Law’ protest was conceived as an act of defiance – a visual manifesto advocating the decriminalisation of marijuana. Alexis Anastasiou and his studio Visualfarm worked at the intersection of projection, drones, lasers, lighting and digital art for this protest, developing a mobile LED lighting system and a projector that can be carried by a drone. Animated typography and a carefully composed soundtrack further emphasized the message.

ALEXIS ANASTASIOU

Alexis Anastasiou is a visual artist known for his groundbreaking urban interventions using projection mapping on buildings and public structures. His work redefines architectural spaces, blending moving images with the landscape to create dynamic, immersive experiences. Rather than merely adding visual effects to facades, his projections introduce sound, movement, and narrative, transforming the built environment into a stage for new forms of interaction and perception.

Projects such as Video Guerilla, his visual interventions at Virada Cultural, and large-scale projections at Minhocão reshape public spaces, turning streets into more than just transit routes—they become channels for people, data, stories, and ideas. His work also explores the impact of projection mapping on interior spaces, altering atmospheres and inserting new narratives within architectural settings. By making the screen an integral part of the built environment, Anastasiou transforms urban and domestic spaces into immersive storytelling platforms, where architecture itself becomes a medium for experience and dialogue.
